Many parents feel unsure about how- and when to talk to their teens about alcohol. Should you be strict? Open? Realistic? What if they’re already experimenting?
In this session, Cecily Mak, author of Undimmed, will explore how parents can have more honest, effective conversations with teens about alcohol by shifting the focus from rules and fear to habits, intention, and self-awareness.
Drawing from her work on habit change and her experience parenting two teenage sons, Cecily will discuss how teens use alcohol and other behaviors to cope with stress and social pressure, how to recognize when a habit may be turning unhealthy, and how adults can model healthy boundaries without demanding perfection.
The session will offer practical language and reflection tools parents and psychologists can use to help teens notice patterns, understand motivation, and make more intentional choices over time — reframing teen drinking not as a moral issue, but as part of a longer learning process that supports trust and well-being.
